The National Meteorological Service being the government watch dog on issues of weather and
climate observed the year 2021 to be one with numerous significant weather and climate events
which not only marked the variation and evolution of climate in Cameroon but fitted well in the
global climate science.
The rainfall situation for 2021 witnessed a late onset in the Centre, Far North and the East regions.
Interesting is the fact that this did not have a great negative impact on especially the Agricultural
sector which is 90% rainfed. The late onset was very fast compensated for by the continuous and
regular rains with little or no dry spells. Extreme rainfall events equally marked the rainy season in
2021. Heavy rains in several parts of the country resulted in numerous flashfloods and flooding
events with subsequent consequences that are well highlighted in this report.
The temperature situation analyzed in the report indicates 2021 as the second warmest years for the
past twenty one years. A general temperature increase of about
1.27°C was observed compared to the
1981–2010 climatology. This was much felt west of the Adamawa plateau with significant warming
of
2°C to 2.5°C around the western part of the Adamawa.
The observation network with adaptation to technological advances recorded data from its automatic
weather stations dotted all over the country as well as manual stations. The deployment of the young
trained technical staff enhanced the data collection process. The data from the NOAA NCEP CPC
was equally used. The satellite reception station with data reception after every 15 minutes in near
real time made numerical weather prediction easier with reliable weather forecast and w rnings
available.
Another very important development that made the 2021 report easier was the realization of the
climatological data digitization project by which the historical climatological data of the National
Meteorological Service since colonial time was successfully digitized.
